National Safety Council of Australia - 2006 Awards of Excellence

  Media Release October 6th 2006

   2006 NSCA/Telstra

National Safety Award Winner for Excellence

Gold Coast Business Wins Prestigious National Award

ITE Services has won the prestigious National Safety Council of Australia Award for Best Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Training Program in a joint submission with Catholic Education, Diocese of Parramatta in Sydney.

The NSCA/Telstra National Safety Awards of Excellence is the national workplace health and safety recognition scheme acknowledging and encouraging individuals and organisations who have excelled in this field and gives the recognition which they deserve. Australia-wide. With the support of Telstra as the major sponsor since 2000, the awards are presented annually by the NSCA.

ITE Services is a partnership operating from offices at Elanora on the Gold Coast and was established between Bruce Lewis and Deborah Jones CFP. in 2002.

ITE Services developed the online multimedia resource, 'OnGuard' Safety Training Program, which is a student-centred Technology and Applied Studies safety training package. The Parramatta Catholic Education Office implemented this program and provided training and advice for schools.

Bruce Lewis from ITE Services, Executive Director of Schools Parramatta Diocese, Greg Whitby and Catholic Education Office OHS Coordinator, Harry McNaught received the award at a ceremony at the annual NSCA Awards ceremony in Sydney on the 5th October.

Bruce Lewis, a senior teacher in a catholic school in the Lismore Diocese developed the multimedia resources in his own time, over the last four years and worked with teachers and other safety industry experts to develop the content and tailor his training product to the needs of schools across Australia.

“As a teacher of nearly 30 years experience in school workshops, I recognised that safety was a critical issue in the technology areas of secondary schools and so I began to develop a training program for teachers to manage student learning in the use of high risk machinery and a range of other workshop tools and equipment. We currently have a diverse client base that reaches across all states in Australia, including the full range of government and non-government education systems." said Mr Lewis.

“This is a wonderful recognition of our commitment to providing the best possible learning opportunities for our students,” said Mr Whitby - Exective Director CEO Parramatta. “The breadth of subjects we offer, like metalwork and food technology, extends students’ learning and capabilities. However, they also come with a responsibility to ensure they are offered in a safe environment.”

“We have worked hard on OHS training so that our students and teachers are aware of, and well trained in, safety procedures to ensure learning is conducted in the safest way possible,” said Mr Whitby.

The 'OnGuard' Safety Training Program provides students with information about machinery, and then assesses students’ knowledge using an online exam that generates a Safety Certificate if they achieve 100 per cent.

Harry McNaught, OHS Coordinator CEO Parramatta, who coordinated all of the training and provided advice to schools said the program was mandated in all Parramatta Diocesan Catholic Schools in 2004.

“We have followed up the training with two audits to ensure the program has been implemented effectively across the system,” said Mr McNaught. “This award acknowledges those teachers who have been involved in designing training tools and conducting audits.”

The 'OnGuard' Safety Training Program is part of the Parramatta Diocese' - 'OHS in Secondary KLAs' project which, to date, has completed auditing and training in the TAS curriculum area including woodwork, metalwork, textiles, food technology, design, creative arts and agriculture, and science.
